The Cookie is happy to announce the return of the mercurial talent Blue Rose Code. Blue Rose Code is not folk music. Or so he’s been told. Ross Wilson, the Edinburgh-born songwriter who performs under that name, doesn’t write folk songs. But having discovered the traditional music of the British Isles whilst in exile down south, he fell in love with what he heard. Those sounds informed what happened next. Blue Rose Code's latest album, The Ballads Of Peckham Rye, features a remarkable roll call of musicians from the folk side of the fence, including Karine Polwart, Lau’s Aidan O’Rourke and the lead single from Ballads features Mercury Music Prize Nominee, Kathryn Williams. • Red Charlie Ltd. Promotions Presents: Robert Vincent + Martha Bean 12/04/15 *MATINEE SHOW*

Robert Vincent (Liverpool, UK) released his first album (Life in Easy Steps) in 2012, which attracted huge critical acclaim, from Q magazine, Rolling Stone and Daily Express amongst some of the highest praise. The editor of Q Magazine went on to suggest that Robert was comparable to Springsteen or Van Morrison. "This is a confident, evocative and resiliently good first album" Stephen Unwin - Daily Express Robert writes his own songs, that blend country, rock and folk influences together with his own early experiences of listening to his brothers Pink Floyd albums; his father's Johnny Cash and of course his home city gave him the Beatles to listen to. Thoughtfully blending all these influences, and lending his own charismatic interpretations the result is an extraordinarily involving listening experience. It's easy to empathise with both the lyrics and the emotion evoking melodies, and Robert has promised that his second album (to be released in 2015) will only build on his early success and deliver even more thought provoking listening. • The Cookie Presents: Girl Friend + Guests 23/04/15

Started in 2014 and inspired by the classic 80’s electronic pop of Roxy Music, Soft Cell and Japan Manchester’s GIRL FRIEND found a sound all of their own. A band unknowingly fizzing with modern feel and described recently as 'honing in on the particulars of passion and desire.' The band’s songs channel the muse of lead singer Amory, an individual painting himself in lyrics as a character in internal conflict; consumed by his own vanity and either maladjusted or hopelessly hedonistic. All these complex themes are delivered in palatable thrusts of pop decadence and light-hearted reflections. On the song themes Amory states "I found it interesting to juxtapose the dour moods and fatal flaws, with almost clichéd views on style and glamour. To dress the misery in something beautiful. The experiences of sexual frustration and amorous longing are portrayed with a graceful exterior." Recent track 'STOP' and it's surrealist video picked up early responses from blogs like The 405 and Ear Milk as well as interviews with BBC Introducing and Shell Zenner at Amazing Radio. The follow-up ‘Chemical Reaction’ (a romantic ode to the fear of romance) picked up the most praise of GIRL FRIEND's output so far; described by ‘When The Gramophone Rings’ blog as 'a whole-package-mix of sensual music and a cool vocal, with bright guitar riffs, tight rhythm, polished synths and a weightless chorus.' A remix by NME favourites 'By the Sea' followed bringing the band to date with ‘Monte Carlo’. Suitably themed on romance in the riviera the track is imbued with mediterranean sunshine and dance floor decadence, with a nod to francophone gloss of Phoenix and the detailed electronic production of M83, Hot Chip and the Greco Roman label. “A delightfully bombastic disco-pop chorus more explosive than a baking soda and vinegar volcano. These boys know the science of a great sound” The Line of Best Fit (Song of the Day) “Girl Friend seem to have arrived with their sound complex, exact, intoxicating.” Clashmusic “Girl Friend offer themselves up as a band ready to skew and defy whenever the occasion presents itself” DIY Mag “Girl Friend present a refined and entrancing sound always injecting strong emotion into each of their songs.” Ear Milk Doors 8PM £TBC

  • The Cookie Presents: John J. Presley + Guests 19/05/15

It is a story of breaking the mould; a love affair with tone; light and shade; a strict discipline and a desire to create something different. From a record collection that journeys through early jazz and blues, to the might of huge iconic soundscapes from bands like Mogwai; and a huge respect for the songwriting mastery of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, John J Presley has certainly honed his own sound and approach. After two single releases in 2014, John J Presley saw huge support across the UK, with radio plays from Zane Lowe, John Kennedy, Tom Robinson and Phil Taggart, with an addition to XFM’s Evening Playlist on top. Many shows followed for John and his band: personal guests on the last ever Jim Jones Revue tour across Europe, and countless other shared stages with the likes of Pulled Apart By Horses, Amazing Snakeheads and Band of Skulls. Their BBC Introducing performance at Reading and Leeds being hailed a highlight in The Times. '...this is an altogether darker variant of the form, one that finds itself rubbing shoulders in the twisted and twilit worlds of Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and Nick Cave. As exemplified by his two coruscating singles, 'Left' and 'Honeybee', Presley doesn't just sing his songs; he inhabits them and in doing so invites the listener to be complicit in his shadowy tales.' The Quietus 2015 has already seen him named as one of XFM's Great X-Pectations for 2015 and sign to Vital Music Group. John J Presley and his band will be releasing their debut EP in June with a UK tour and festival appearances to support the release. “If Bukowski was to join a band of our time I think it’d be this one. The vocals remind you of Tom Waits or Johnny Cash, while the guitars have the same drive, as Jack White’s or the Black Keys do, only much dirtier." MusicNTing Blog Doors 8PM £6 ADV
