  • Magic Teapot Presents: YUKON BLONDE + The Wooden Sky + Chambers 08/12/15 Over the past two years, Yukon Blonde has earned no shortage of acclaim for its hook-heavy brand of pop rock. But despite their love of vintage rock ‘n’ roll, the members aren’t the kind of guys who cling to the past. The members were drawn to the fast, punk-tinged tracks that Innes has been penning in his spare time. Danceable and unrepentantly poppy, these new tracks evoked late-’70s/early-’80s post-punk and drew inspiration from artists like the Buzzcocks, Ramones and Talking Heads. The Wooden Sky There’s so much good music coming out of Canada at the moment I’m starting to think there’s something in the maple syrup and the latest release from The Wooden Sky adds considerable weight to this waffle-based theory. Let’s Be Ready is the fourth album from the Toronto-based group and it signals a shift: it’s goodbye acoustic control and hello electric chaos. The band wear this more raucous sound well and existing fans shouldn’t be too thrown, as in all other respects they are still recognisable. For the uninitiated, frontman Gavin Gardiner’s vibrato-heavy vocal is somewhere between Tracy Chapman and Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz. This suits the whole vibe of Let’s Be Ready, which was recorded using fully live takes with, as is the fashion, the reverb set to ‘big cave’. The shimmering guitar parts play a massive role in shaping the album, with Gardiner’s delicate fingerpicking supercharged (rather than obliterated) by guitarist Simon Walker’s overlaying of heavier lines. The latter’s playing sounds out-of-control but of course is anything but; reminiscent of The Posies’ Jon Auer, at his peak. Doors 8PM // £6 ADV
  • Magic Teapot Presents: ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF + Courtney Askey + Smokin' Renegades 09/12/15 When Swedish singer/musician Anna von Hausswolff was young, her parents used to tell her stories about a place the family loved to visit. The location is seeped in a complicated history: a home, for example, to Sweden’s traditional folk music, it’s an area of outstanding natural beauty, but once provided the backdrop for a momentous uprising against the country’s king during which thousands of peasants were slaughtered, leaving its landscapes bathed in blood. It became, to her, a place of mystery, magic and terror, and, though she won’t say where it is, she still returns repeatedly, if sometimes only in her imagination. She calls the place Miraculous. Much of the music on The Miraculous draws from these stories and images while making excessive use of the Acusticum Pipe Organ in Piteå, Northern Sweden, whose colossal sound – with nine thousand pipes, it’s one of the biggest of its kind in the country – swells heroically throughout the album. Inaugurated in 2012, and designed by Gerard Woehl, it lends the record a unique edge, enabling moments of true drama and supplying the brooding drones and dreamy soundscapes that provide the album’s foundations. Anna von Hausswolff has spent the majority of time since the release of her last album “CEREMONY” touring the world and playing special shows in very special settings such as the Lincoln Cathedral, in England’s East Midlands or the Town Hall during the Sydney Festival as well as headline tours, including China, and opening for bands such as Efterklang. She also recently lend vocals to the Royal Swedish Opera House’s ballet of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Courtney Askey Courtney Askey is a Leicester based musician, artist, filmmaker and writer. She has lived, produced and performed works in England, Paris and Hong Kong. She has been prolifically writing and recording music since the tender age of fifteen and started playing live in her hometown at sixteen. Bucking the trend of the archetypal singer songwriter troubadour’s traditional subjects of love and loss, Courtney writes in her own words, songs about, ‘Going for coffee and doing nothing’. That is not to say that there is no depth to her lyrics, which captivate and amuse in equal measure. The words, when married to her honey coated vocal, draw the listener in with the warmth and infectious charm of her delivery. Previously fronting bands Courtney Askey and the Gentlemen and Lure, Courtney is now working solo again. In 2013 she released a self produced experimental four track EP under the name Carmen Haze. In September of 2013, she moved to Hong Kong for three months of writing and gigging, and performed around the island. In April 2014, Courtney moved to Paris where she wrote a number of songs for upcoming releases. She is now living and performing in England. In May 2015, Courtney signed to Blizzard Records, and will release an EP on the label in the coming year.
